The FutureWork Institute, a diversity-training consultant, hosts companies on FutureWork Island in the virtual world of Second Life® to complete intriguing exercises that are only possible in a virtual environment. For example, they conduct generational training, where participants can walk in the shoes of a fellow employee.

A “baby boomer” employee will be assigned a “Gen Y” avatar (physical representation in Second Life) and hang out in an environment that relates to how they look at the world, American Idol posters don the walls and 50 Cent music plays. The “baby boomer” will answer questions and go through exercises as a “Gen Y” staffer, so they really have to try and think like their fellow worker, as tough as it may be.Corporations expand internationally, companies hire from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and a new generation of staffers join the workforce. All these developments equate to a more diverse workplace and an increasing need to educate staff and executives on each other’s backgrounds so they can empathize with one another and work in harmony. Companies are increasingly harnessing virtual world technology to create a collaborative environment for geographically disperse employees, and a dynamic environment where employees can absorb the experiences of their peers.
